On Feruary 24th an 8 year old boy from Lincolnton, N.C. died from an apprent heart attack while attending school at Pumpkin Center Intermediate. After complaining of trouble breathing he visited the nurse's office where unfortunately he went into cardiac arrest. He was transported to a hospital close by, then taken to CMC Charlotte. He passed away during the night. Now the question remains...should parents be worried? The truth is heart attacks in children can happen but are very rare. These types of attacks in children usually occur in such diseases as Kawasakie's disease, which involves inflammation of the blood vessels. Most chest pains in children derive from asthma, infection from a virus, or even strained muscles. Parents who have children complaining of severe chest pain should seek medical attention immediately. Even if the pains turn out to not be severe but still painful it is still always safe to seek medical attention.
